Do You Qualify?

In order to qualify to build and later purchase a Hart County Habitat for Humanity home, you must meet 3 basic requirements:

            1. Have a need for decent housing.

            2. Have the ability to pay for a home.

As a home-buyer, it is necessary that you have a steady income history. Steady income must be between 30% and 60% of the annual median income for Hart County. You may still be considered even if you have a steady income from sources other than employment. Please check the chart below to see if your income is within our guidelines.

            3. Be willing to partner with Habitat.

Your partnership with Hart County Habitat will mean putting in 250 hours (for a 1-adult family) or 500 hours (for a 2-adult family) of sweat equity working on your own home and the homes of other families. Your family and friends may contribute up to 50% of your required sweat equity hours. You may also earn sweat equity hours by completing budgeting and homeowner education classes and by participating in other Hart County Habitat activities.

A few key points…
  • We build homes in partnership with people who are unable to secure conventional financing.
  • Most of the labor on Habitat homes is done by volunteers and partner families.
  • When the home is completed, the partner family makes a small down payment and purchases their home.
  • Unlike other mortgages, Habitat mortgages are interest free.
  • The monthly mortgage payments homeowners make go
toward the process of helping other families build homes.
  • In addition to monthly house payments, each homeowner must pay for their utilities, home maintenance and other standard expenses
